China is a unitary multi-national country where, through the long process of historical development, people from many different ethnic groups have together opened up the vast Chinese territory, created an outstanding culture, and helped shape the current form of the Chinese nation. There are 56 ethnic groups in China. Due to a differing geographical environment and living conditions, each ethnic group has formed its own unique traditions and customs, while, at the same time, working to promote the prosperity of the Chinese nation.
